The School Party Program (SSP) was created to bring excitement and fascination of seeing actual astronomical objects through telescopes to school children who otherwise have only seen them in textbooks. Over the decades, this program has touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of children with the generous support of volunteer SJAA astronomers.

Important info for the event:

  • Be careful not to touch the telescopes.
  • Please don’t use white light or camera flash, as they interfere with night vision and the telescopes. The PTA will provide red film for flashlights.
  • Keep all food and drinks away from the telescopes. PTA will have hot chocolate available in a designated area only.
  • Dress warmly, since it will likely be chilly.
  • Toddlers are too young to understand how to look into telescopes, nor can they make sense of what’s going on. When lifted, their natural tendency is to grab onto whatever is available, and that’s sure to be the telescope. Bring them again in a year or two.

SJAA is supported generously by its members who volunteer to make school star parties happen. Consider joining SJAA for a $20/yr membership or making a donation.
